more new development

Wed on foot - PM

At the corner of Lima and Belgrano, I sit here having my second cup of coffee and enjoy watching the people heading off to work. on foot, by car, by bike, by bus.....what ever means it takes. I wonder how the world meets our needs. I reach for my BB....Oh God!!! do i really miss it???

Social cultures are the same regardless if you leave in Milwaukee WI, Paris, Ottawa or BA...we all wear clothes, want to look our best....and as i sip my coffee how can you miss a street person looking for plastic bottles, cans and spare change.

Our cultures co-exist no matter where you are in this world. I gave the guy some pesos and he smiled back at me and we just crossed a culture barrier.

Other cultures were visible during my travels today.....how about traffic cultures? You would think we are all the same with respect to the traffic stuff other then driving on the other side of the road. Down here they do things a bit different and it make you think you are at the drag races waiting for the lights to stage so you can be the first one of the mark. Here they give you orange before green so get ready and go on GREEN. You can actually hear the cars, buses, cyclist....etc getting ready to jump on the GREEN.

In some of the picture you may see some people crossing the street on red and green. Even though you get green cars don't have the right of way. As you look at some of those pictures many time i wondered if people were going to be a victim of the green light. Well to my surprise...vehicle actually slow down and let pedestrians cross...without getting upset.....

Poverty is prelevant here and i am amazed at some of the creative ways they do at collecting money. I stood at one corner on Florida Avencida....where of course is a major shopping district. Its a street mall and most of the people you see and hear on that street are Brits, US, Asians...all nationalities. Anyway I noticed this young girl maybe 8 yrs old, she was begging for money but i also noticed she was collecting drink cans. As people entered the little store she would stop them and would show her bag of cans and indicating if she could get there can if there were buying any can drinks. I watched her follow people who were drinking can drinks and bringing them back and putting them in her bag.

BA is political central for Argentinians. As you can see in some of the pictures some people were demonstrating and it seems there are set times for those types of activities. Amazing that time slots for protest...11 am and 4 pm. If you look closely at some of those pictures...you see yellow trucks...there are response team trucks just in case if the demonstration gets out of hand.

Other picture you see in there are some interesting architecture, some areas where some new development is taking place.near the water front. The bridge you see is a swing pedestrian bridge and if you look closely you can see the base where the bridge swings as boats approach.

Tomorrow will be subway trips to the burrows of each subway line. This should show me more about what the city is made of.

Report 1...AM report

Hi everyone, AM report...

I have arrived. What a long flight!!!

So here goes my first attempt at telling my friends and family about a voyage I never thought I would do. This trip started way back in November when I read in the Ottawa Citizen that this trip would be interesting and seeing the people, culture and the wonderful places in Argentina.

So i thought i had it all done checked and re-checked all of the details, flight departure times, lists of items to bring.....your lists of requirements. Normal practice is to review that twice...don't we say that .."Santa" always checked his lists twice.

Oh well my first failure on the way to the airport I remember that i had not written down my sunglasses and not have written them down I had left them in my pocket of my jacket that morning.

Arriving at the airport and being dropped off happens without any hitches. Now getting back to that requirements document....my list, I had in my hands my electronic ticket, boarding pass...etc. Ok whats with the line if i have all that electronic paper stuff. We now know why we hate line ups. Ok, I forgot to tag my bag, i had questions about my return flight....wow it is way to expensive to make any changes. Now after seeing the clerk i have permission to board the plane and what do i do i go to another line up. Gee i hate taking my shoes off, why don't we just take all our clothes off at the airport and then get dressed once we get to our destination. Having to take my shoes off reminds me of something my mother always told me....make sure your socks don't have any hole in them or at least they are clean. I was wearing the same socks since Friday. Take out change from pocket, Ipod everything electronic in the tray and "yes take the jacket off". No hassles here, I am good to go.

I got through quick enough and with some time on hand so i made a few phone calls to some friends, enemies, prison quards. Go to check what gate and if things are still going to happen as planned. Oh yes planned activities where do they fall again....lets see???

Oh well some of the best made plans always needs some tweaking. Guess what Air Canada and good old weather man were debating who was going to win. The flight departure time had already changed to 7:25 instead of 7:00. As we were instructed to board the plane don't we all get excited? As i walked down the ramp to the plane excitement overcame me..."OH GOD!!! I am actually starting this incredible journey. Tears overcame me, my heart started beating stronger, I started to see double Oh No.....now i was angry the pilot had just announced we were going to be further delayed. Dam there goes the schedule again. The flight to Toronto was no more or no less than average. Winter storm in Toronto created the delay. Arrival just as planned all wheels touched the ground at the same time...what a concept.

Walk a mile in those shoes...to get to the next gate. Some time on hand...so sipping and watching 2 famous hockey teams(Toronto vs Montreal) play hockey easily killed the time in between flights.

Boarding time more excitement, 2nd leg of trip about to take off. Again surprises in the schedule. Because of old man winter other connecting flights were late and that delayed our departure time. This flight was a bonus to the original requirements. I needed a seat on the plane and i had one but with a number of empty seats I had 2 seats to myself on the right side of the plane. Now i am comfortable and the seats were near the watercloset. Good flight, good food. I reflected often as i looked through the window on a virtual see of clouds wondering what it would be like to sail in the darkness into the unknown just as this plane was doing for me....visiting a country not knowing .....unknowns.

No photos to share in this report.....
